Tips and Tricks to Bake Healthier Desserts
Desserts have the reputation of being very delicious, but also very bad for your health. I personally love desserts, specially cookies, so I love having them after every meal. However, this can be considered unhealthy because of the amount of sugar that they contain. Since baking is one of my hobbies, I have made it my mission to substitute some of the ingredients in my favorite recipes, so that I can still enjoy all the desserts that I love without sacrificing flavor or my health. Now, I bring you my favorite tips and tricks to make any dessert you want in a healthier way.
-
CHANGE WHITE FLOUR TO WHOLE GRAIN FLOUR
Substituting white flour with whole grain flours such as whole wheat, oats, or almond flour can help add fiber and other micro nutrients to your desserts. It is important to experiment with them as they can change the texture of the baked goods. However, the heartier and denser texture of the desserts might help with making you feel fuller for longer time, which can prevent overindulgence later on. Whole grains are great alternatives for baking, but they do require a little bit of practice to make sure your desserts are perfect.

SEEK FOR SUGAR ALTERNATIVES
Nowadays, there are A LOT of different sugar alternatives that are provide more nutritional value than plain white refined sugar. If you are looking for having a more natural source of sugars, you can opt for honey or maple syrup. These are delicious and bring a series of micro nutrients to the desserts. Although, if you are someone who is watching out for their sugar intake, I recommend using Monk fruit. I always bake for my dad who is very careful around his sugar intake and he says he can’t notice the difference whenever I use white sugar or Monk fruit. It also has almost no calories per serving, so it is good if you are on a weight loss journey, but you still want to enjoy a sweet treat.
In the case that Monk fruit is hard to find for you, you can use stevia or erythritol. These alternatives are more common and therefore more accessible for people with a passion for baking.
-
ADD FRESH FRUIT TO YOUR RECIPES
Talking about antioxidants, fruit has a lot of them. I personally love fruits, so adding them to desserts seems like a good idea. Fruits like bananas and apples are great substitutes for sugar because of their sweetness. Aside from this, they are rich in fiber and micro nutrients like potassium and vitamin C. Great option for the body and the taste buds!

OPT FOR DARK CHOCOLATE
I know chocolate is one of the best things ever created in the world. But, it is not necessary to have a good chocolate chip cookie. In fact, the best chocolate chip/chunk cookies I have made, I swapped the milk chocolate for dark chocolate. Since dark chocolate has less sugar, it creates a balance with the sweetness of the cookie mix and the slight bitterness of the chocolate. The best part is that dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and delicious.
There are so many more tips and tricks about how to make desserts in a healthier way. However, these are my favorite tips on how make desserts in a healthier way. Remember, everything in moderation is the key to a healthy life. So, don’t feel obligated to change the recipe of your favorite cookies or your favorite scones. You can still enjoy them just as they are. These are just some ideas on how to make desserts be a little healthier, so that we can show love to our bodies by feeding them nutrient dense desserts without missing out on the delicious flavor.
